I recently heard of an interesting concept by Author Pema Chodron. 

Imagine a circle, with another circle around it, and then a third around that

  • The inner circle is our comfort zone
  • The middle one is the challenge/learning zone
  • The outer circle is the high risk zone.

If we live in that comfort zone circle for too long we stop growing.

That circle is a place to go to take a step back & get centered.

The 2nd circle is where we grow. 

That is where our best qualities are tested and strengthened.

Qualities like compassion, patience, creative, bravery.

This is where we push ourselves enough to feel uncomfortable-but if we can hold ourselves at the edge long enough it becomes comfortable and we can go further.

The trick is to not push ourselves into the outer circle-the high risk zone.

The one that we are not prepared to handle in that moment.

So how are you going to stay in the 2nd circle?  Challenging yourself enough to grow but not so much that you enter the high risk zone?

Are you going to try something that you have been thinking about doing?  Something that keeps popping up in your head?  Or something that has been on your bucket list for a while and you just can’t let it go?  It could be something challenging in a physical way-or it could be reaching out to someone-either a family member or a friend that you’ve lost touch with.  Or just reaching out to someone in need.

I challenge you to pick one thing to focus on and see how far you can take it in 2018.
